Adesina dismisses claim that Boko Haram control half of Borno state

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, Femi Adesina, has dismissed remarks by Senator Kaka Garbai, the legislator representing Borno-Central senatorial district, that 50 per cent of Borno State was under the control of the Boko Haram sect.

Mr. Adesina was speaking in an interview on Channels Television, on Monday where he said Garbai's claims have been debunked by the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima.

The Special adviser added that senator could not claim to have more credible information about the state than the state governor.

He said, “Not one of the 27 local government areas of Borno State is dominated by the Boko Haram sect. Senator Garbai’s claim has been debunked by the Borno State Government. I think the state governor’s information is superior to that of the senator. The state has superior information than him.”

The president’s spokesperson said the United States had also donated tanks to assist Nigeria’s military operation in the North-East. He added that the tanks will be crucial in defeating the terror group as they were resistant to landmines.

He also commented on Lai Mohammed's comment about the past government purchasing inferior weapons and and President Jonathan's claim that weapons currently being used to fight the insurgency were purchased by him.

He said: "If we say government is a continuum, then what is the big deal in you buying weapons and the next government using them? The second is that the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the weaponry is inferior. I am sure he must have relied on facts from the Defence headquarters.

“The fact is that you cannot separate the economy from the anti-corruption war. When people ask me the economic direction of this government, I tell them that from the anti-corruption war, you know the economic direction. The direction is the one in which there must be accountability and everywhere the President went, he has sought help to fight the corruption war. He has been to the United Arab Emirates and the US. There is a lot of success.”
