AFCON: Egypt clips Eagles' wings as Nigeria crashes out
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have failed to qualify for the 2017 African Cup of Nations after their 1-0 defeat at Alexandria.
Mohamed Salah's goal in Kaduna and Chad's decision to withdraw from the qualifying round meant that anything other than a win was unlikely to be enough for Nigeria in the crucial game.
The first half ended 0-0 but in truth the Pharoahs of Egypt always looks like the most likely to score.
Chances for the Nigerians were limited and were unable to convert their possession into attempts on goal.
The second half saw the Pharaohs maintaining the momentum and finally got their goal in the 65th minute.
Ramadan Sobhy shot towards the Nigerian goal and the ball rolled under goalkeeper Akpeyi’s arm.
The Egyptians saw out the match to seal their qualification for the AFCON.
The Eagles will now miss out on the continental showpiece for the second consecutive time.
Egypt now has an unassailable 5-point lead over Nigeria with both sides having just one game left in the qualifying stage.
Abducted Army colonel found dead
In a press statement issued by the acting director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, the Army said the deceased was probably killed on the same day he was abducted.
The statement read, “The Nigerian Army wishes to regrettably inform the public that Colonel Samaila Inusa who was kidnapped on Sunday, 27th March, 2016, was found dead today at about 6pm.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that, most likely, the late senior officer was killed same day he was kidnapped by his abductors. This is because the body was found already decomposing around Ajyaita village, off Eastern Bypass, Kaduna, Kaduna State.”
The statement added that the body of the late colonel will be transferred to 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna.
The Army has vowed to uncover those behind the crime and make them pay for it.
“We wish to state, in unmistakeable terms, that whoever is behind his abduction and murder would be fished out to face the full wrath of the law,” it said.
There was no demand for any ransom after he was abducted.
Then Lieutenant Colonel Samaila Inusa was the Commander, 81 Battalion located in Bulabulin, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State. He was later promoted to the rank of Colonel in December 2015 and transferred to Armed Forces and Command Staff College, Jaji, before he met his untimely death.
May his soul rest in peace.
Popular Angolan rapper jailed for 5 years
Luaty Beirao, a prominent Angolan rapper, has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison after he was found guilty of planning a rebellion against President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
He was sentenced by a court in the capital, Luanda, along with 16 other activists. Their jail terms varied from two to eight years.
Amnesty International has criticized the ruling and said the accused were sentenced by a “kangaroo court”.
The 17 had been in detention since June following their arrest after discussing a book about non-violent resistance at their book club.
Mr dos Santos has ruled oil-rich Angola since 1979.
Beirao has regularly criticized the government and frequently called for a fairer distribution of the southern African state’s oil wealth.
The judge convicted him of “rebellion against the president of the republic, criminal association and falsifying documents”.
There has been widespread outrage following the verdict. Various rights groups said it showed that Mr dos Santos’ government was becoming increasingly repressive in a bid to remain in power.
The Human Rights Watch said the verdict was “a ridiculous scandal”, while Amnesty International described the defendants on Twitter as “prisoners of conscience” who had been subjected to a “kangaroo court trial [which] violated international standards”.
The jailed activists, who belonged to a youth movement, had previously held demonstrations demanding the resignation of Mr dos Santos, who has been in power for 36 years.
Their book club had discussed the 1993 book by Gene Sharp called From Dictatorship to Democracy: A Conceptual Framework for Liberation.
The end of Angola's civil war in 2002 led to an economic boom as the country is currently Africa’s second-largest oil producer. Critics has however said that the country's wealth has only benefitted a few.
