PDP appoints Sheriff as new Chairman

The National Executive Committee, NEC, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has confirmed the appointment of a former governor of Borno State, Ali Sheriff, as the new chairman of the party.

Mr. Sheriff will steer the affairs of the leading opposition party in Nigeria and takes over from Uche Secondus, who acted as interim chairman following the resignation of Ahmadu Mu’azu after the 2015 general election.

The spokesperson of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, said Mr. Sheriff has already been sworn into office on Tuesday.

Sheriff courted controversy a few years ago after it was alleged he was a major financier of the extremist sect, Boko Haram. He has also been questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over allegations of abuse of office, embezzlement and misappropriation during his time as governor of Borno state.
