Hostage situation in Sydney Australia

Three people have been shot at a factory near Sydney amid reports that hostages may have been taken, according to police.

A 43-year-old man died at the scene, while two people were wounded.

Of those injured, one is undergoing emergency surgery at Liverpool Hospital, and the other is being treated for superficial wounds to the lower part of his body.

A New South Wales police spokesman added: "Negotiators are on the scene, and the operation is continuing. It's a delicate stage and I really can't give you much more information than that."

He refused to confirm whether there were any hostages trapped inside the building.

Cassandra Wood, a reporter for 9 News at the scene, told Sky News that a couple of people have been arrested from inside the building and placed in the back of a police van.

"We've been told by police that the gunman hasn't yet been arrested - so we understand he is still in that building with a number of hostages," she added.

Greg Byrnes, a reporter for Sky News Australia, has said the shooting unfolded at a signage business on an industrial estate - with witnesses hearing up to five shots being fired.

"Some radio stations are saying it is a domestic incident - but there is nothing official at this stage," he added.

The public has been urged to avoid the area as the police's investigation continues, and employees in neighbouring buildings have been told to stay away from windows.
