Meet the Danish Lady helping less privileged children in Nigeria

Anja Ringgren Loven has dedicated her life in Nigeria to helping less privileged children.

She has spent the last 3years doing so, and saving children who have been abandoned by their families for being possessed by witchcraft.

She raises funds from home back in Denmark to assist the kids. She has a documentary coming up titled "Anja Africa".

Below is what she had to say:

I've seen much here in Nigeria over the last 3 years. I have spared you for many experiences when we've been on the rescue operations. Thousands of children are being accused of being witches and we've both seen torture of children, dead children and frightened children. This footage shows why I fight. Why I sold everything I own. Abuja residents to get free prepaid meters

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has announced that it would commence installation of prepaid meters pilot scheme at no charge in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in February.

Mr Abimbola Odubiyi, the Executive Director of the company’s Regulatory and Stakeholders Relations, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said that AEDC installed 5,000 free prepaid meters to customers in Minna, Niger State last year. He said the exercise will extend to customers in the FCT beginning from February 2016, where it is expected another installation of 1,250 free prepaid meters will be carried out. 

Odubiyi said the exercise was to help ascertain the efficiency of the project. He further explained that the new tariff would last for 10 years but expected energy tariffs to come down as the sector is stabilized. would be used as a test-case so as to ascertain the efficiency of the projects. 

The Executive Director encouraged customers of AEDC to always pay their energy bills promptly to enable the company to give them quality service.

Zika: WHO declares public health emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Zika a global emergency following rapid rates of infection in South America. 

Babies in the region have been born with microcephaly which have been attributed to the disease. According to the BBC, there have been over 4,000 cases of babies born with underdeveloped brains.

The WHO alert places Zika as a major source of worry. It is now expected that research and aid will be fast tracked to tackle the infection. 

WHO director general, Margaret Chan, said Zika was now a public health emergency.

“I am now declaring that the recent cluster of microcephaly and other neurological abnormalities reported in Latin America following a similar cluster in French Polynesia in 2014 constitutes a public health emergency of international concern.”

The only way to prevent contacting the disease is to avoid being bitten by the Aedes mosquito which transmits the infection. There are currently no vaccine or drugs to stop Zika. 

The WHO has delivered strong warnings that Zika is likely to “spread explosively” across nearly all of the Americas. More than 20 countries are reporting cases.

Former Militant leader Tompolo challenges warrant arrest

Former militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo (alias Tompolo), has challenged the warrant of arrest issued by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos,  to compel his appearance in court to answer to the criminal charge preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

EFCC, had accused Tompolo and others of diverting the sum of N34 billion belonging to the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency, NIMASA.

Trial judge, Justice Ibrahim Buba, had on January 12, 2016, following an application by EFCC’s counsel, issued a bench warrant for Tompolo’s arrest.

In the application challenging the bench warrnt issued against him, Tompolo is arguing that the EFCC did not follow due process of law in applying for an order of substituted service of the criminal charge against him, adding that no service of the charge was effected as directed by the court before the EFCC applied for a warrant of arrest against him.

He is further claiming, through his counsel, Mr Tayo Oyetibo, SAN, that up till the time of filing the application, he had not been served with the criminal charge nor indeed any warrant of arrest.

According to him, whereas he was prepared to appear in court and answer to any charge against him, he insists that due process of law must be followed and his rights under the law be guaranteed, especially the right to be notified and served with the charge against him.

He also called the attention of the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief of Army Staff and indeed the Navy to the fact that he is challenging the order made against him, so that overzealous persons do not take advantage of the court process to attempt to trample on his legal rights.

Debuchy joins Bordeaux from Arsenal

Matthieu Debuchy has joined Ligue 1 club Bordeaux on loan in a bid to try and make France's Euro 2016 squad. 

The 30-year-old right back will remain with the French side until the end of the season. He had grown frustrated with his lack of opportunities, featuring only seven times for the Gunners this term.
