Sanya Richards-Ross to retire after the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro

 
 
Olympic champion Sanya Richards-Ross has announced that she will retire after the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The 31 year old, will look to make her fourth U.S. Olympic team at the 2016 Olympic track and field trials in July, in order to be able to compete at the Olympics later in the year.

At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she won gold in the 400 metres , after finishing third at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Richards-Ross has also won Olympic gold in the 4x400 relay at the 2004 Olympic Games. She has been the best 400m runner in the world in the past decade, ranking No. 1 in the world from 2005-2009 and again in 2012. 

In addition to her Olympic accolades, she is also a seven-time medalist at the World Championships in Athletics (five of which are gold). In 2009, she was the World Champion in the 400 metres.

 “After over a decade of indescribable successes and challenges, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio will mark the end of my 12th and final professional season,” she wrote. “After my third foot surgery last November, I worked tirelessly to recoup and recover. I put my blood, sweat and tears into the career of my dreams and experienced profound growth and immeasurable rewards along the way. I am so excited to celebrate with one last lap around the world and I hope you will follow along #SRRFinalLap! Let’s do this!”
