Serena Williams loses to Angelique Kerber in Australian open final

Serena Williams was aiming to win her 22nd grand slam, which would have tied her with German legend Steffi Graf for most in the Open era, Serena Williams lost in the Australian Open final to another German player: Angelique Kerber.

Kerber beat Williams 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to win the title, in her first grand slam title.

In her post-match comments, Kerber, fighting back tears, said, “My dream came true tonight.”

Williams, who is 34 years old and the No. 1 player in the world, won the first three Grand Slams in 2015 and was looking to complete that year’s “calendar” Grand Slam by winning the U.S. Open. But the pressure to achieve the feat seemed to affect her, and she lost in the semifinals in an error-filled match.

Serena Williams destroys Radwanska to advance to Australian Open final

Serena Williams was in great form in her Australian Open semifinal against Agnieszka Radwanska on Thursday.

She beat the No. 4-seed 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the final in Melbourne for the seventh time in her career. She won the title in each of her first six final appearances.

The only woman standing in her way is first-time finalist Angelique Kerber.

Serena Williams defeats Maria Sharapova in the Australian open

Defending champion Serena Williams, has defeated Maria Sharapova in the 4th round of the Australian Open.

Serena Beats Sharapova in straights sets to advance to the semi-finals 6-4,6-1.

Speaking to Chanel 7 news in Australia, she said: 

"It was super intense. She’s an incredibly intense focused player...when you’re playing someone like that you have to come out with a lot of fire and intensity."

Serena Williams faces Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland next as she bids for a 19th grand slam title.

Serena Williams is still on course in defending her Australian open title.

She cruised to a straight sets victory over Margarita Gasparyan, by winning 6-2, 6-1.

Serena faces Maria Sharapova in the 4th round.

Defending champion Serena Williams, is on course at the Australian Open.

She cruised into the 3rd round by defeating Su-Wei 6-1,6-2.

The next test will be on Friday, when she takes on Daria Kasatkina from Russia.

Serena Williams, began the defence of her Australian open title with a win.

With a win over Camila Giorgi, she defeated her opponent in straight set, winning 6-4, 7-5.

Serena faces Su-Wei Hsieh of Taiwan in the next round.

New record for Serena Williams

With just 2days to the start of a new year 2016, Serena Williams has reached a great milestone in her career, by been No.1 for the 150th week in a row. This week December 28, 2015, puts her right on top.

It was on Monday, February 18, 2013, right after reaching the finals in Doha, when She regained the No.1 ranking, her first time back at the top since her career-threatening injury and illness lay-off for 11 months across 2010 and 2011.

This is the third longest steak at No.1 in WTA history: below are the records. 

186 weeks - Steffi Graf (August 17, 1987 to March 10, 1991)

156 weeks - Martina Navratilova (June 14, 1982 to June 9, 1985)

150 weeks - Serena Williams (February 18, 2013 to present)
