Former female refugee gunning for President in Somalia

Fadumo Dayib has announced that she will be running for President of Somalia. If she wins, she will break new grounds by becoming Somalia's first female President. The mother of four said she had already received death threats but such threats will not stop her from running.
Fadumo, a graduate from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, was born in Kenya to Somalian parents but her family were soon deported to Somalia. They had to flee Somalia again to Finland when the war broke out again. According to the BBC, Fadumo didn't learn to read and write until she was 14.
While announcing her candidacy, she said, "What can Al-Shabbab do to a woman who has died four times? I died when I was born, I died when I was mutilaed, I died on my wedding night and I died when I gave birth to my first child. .

She has had her share of poverty and hardship, but has gone on to earn a masters degree in public health. Mrs. Diyab has worked with the United Nations on issues of maternal health and mother-to-child HIV transmission prevention.

We wish her all the best.
