Refugee Girl granted stay in Germany

Reem Sahwil, a 14-year-old Palestinian girl who cried when Chancellor Angela Merkel informed her she could be deported has been granted a residency permit to stay in the European country until October 2017. She had burst into tears during a televised discussion forum in July, 2015, after Merkel told her that Germany could not admit everyone who wanted to live there. A video clip of the exchange subsequently went viral.
Bild reported that Sahwil has now been granted a residency permit lasting until Oct. 17, 2017. The newspaper gathered this information from the immigration office in the northern city of Rostock. "Merkel's girl can stay here!" Bild screamed in a headline in its Thursday edition, adding that Sahwil was excelling at school. There was also great news for her family as her parents and brother have also been granted permission to stay.
Lorenz Caffier, interior minister for the northern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern told Bild, "I am pleased that Reem's residency status has been clarified,". He added, "The period of uncertainty is over and she can stay here." Merkel has since been named person of the year by both Time magazine and the Financial Times after opening Germany's borders back in August to refugees, many of whom are fleeing the crisis in the Middle East.
