| Ted Cruz's eligibility has been challenged by Republican front runner Donald Trump |
Senator John McCain, in an interview with KFYI, has said it
is “worth looking into” whether Ted Cruz is eligible to run for president,
since the Texas senator was born in Canada.
In the interview he said, “I think there is a question. I am
not a constitutional scholar on that, but I think it is worth looking into. I don’t
think it’s illegitimate to look into it.”
McCain and Cruz have never really been best of friends.
McCain was born outside the US mainland as well, in the Panama Canal Zone but
still ran for President in 2008.
Senator Barry Goldwater,a 1964 Republic presidential
nominee, had also run for office after the supreme court ruled him a
natural-born citizen and was therefore eligible to run even though he was born
in pre-state Arizona when it was still a territory.
He also added that he expected Ted Cruz to get ahead of the
issue saying, “I got ahead of it on being born in the Canal Zone when I was
running in 2008. Look there is a precedent set. Barry Goldwater ran for
president, was born in Arizona when it was a territory. The Panama Canal was a
territory of the United States of America.”
