The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested Lawal Jafaru Isa. Jafaru Isa, a former military governor of Kaduna State and chieftain of the ruling All Progressive Congress, was arrested Wednesday night in connection with the alleged diversion of $2.1 billion meant for procurement of arms by officials of the previous administration.

He is a close friend of Sambo Daasuki and a close political ally of the current president and one-time governorship candidate of the defunct CPC in Kano sate. It is believed he received over N100 million from the embattled national security adviser.

He was arrested at his residence in Abuja after he had refused to honour an invitation from the anti-corruption agency. He had sent a letter to the EFCC seeking a postponement of his appearance on the grounds of the death of a relative.

The Presidency has reacted to the news of the arrest and has said it would not interfere in the arrest and probe of an ally of President Muhammadu Buhari by the EFCC.
