Lassa fever kills medical doctor in Rivers state



Lassa fever has claimed the life of a medical doctor at the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

Dr. Ehival Njamala contracted the disease while treating patients at the Disease Control Unit in the hospital. The doctor’s death brings to three, the number of people who have been killed by the dreaded virus since its outbreak in the state.

The chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association  in the state, Dr. Green Duro, disclosed the news of the doctor’s death to newsmen in Port Harcourt. He also used the opportunity to announce the commencement of a three-day warning strike by the NMA following the kidnap of two medical doctors in the state.

Dr. Ib Aprioku, a consultant with the Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital was kidnapped on January 10, 2016 while Dr. Isaac Opurum, the director in charge of Community Health Services in the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board was kidnapped this week yesterday.
