The Lagos state House of Assembly has amended the laws of the Lagos State University in a bid to permanently end the ongoing crisis. The key amendment will see the school’s Vice Chancellor serve a single term of five years.

The bill for a Law to Amend the Lagos State University Law, 2004, which has gone through public hearing, has seven proposed amendments with the first section containing the changes in the tenure of the Vice Chancellor.

Section 2 of the bill also reads: “the vice chancellor shall exercise general supervision of the university in addition to any other function conferred on or imposed on him by law, the Statute, Ordinance and Regulations and shall be subject to the approval of the Council, exercise general supervision over discipline in the university.

Hon. Lanre Ogunyemi, the Chairman House Committee on Education, said the amendments were to salvage the incessant crisis bedevilling the institution. He said there were also formal ways of checking excesses of the vice chancellor if they became autocratic or showed any dictatorial tendencies.

He attributed the past crisis to the fact that Vice Chancellor who desired a second term in office were usually targeted by such problems. He believed that this would also enhance the quality of education.
