Gisela Mota was killed one day after formally taking office, officials said. She was attacked by four gunmen at her home in the city of Temixco on Saturday.
The attack was confirmed in a tweet by Morelos state governor, Graco Ramirez. He tweeted: “I have been informed of an attack on the mayor of Temixco Gisela Mota, young and beloved companion.”
Police killed two of the attackers and two are in custody, but their names have not been released. The motive for the killing is unclear, but reports have attributed it to drug cartels or gangs.
