Rafael Nadal suffered a disappointing defeat as he failed to make it to the second round of the Australian open for the first time in his career.
Fernando Verdasco knocked countryman Rafael Nadal out of the tournament in a thrilling four hours and 42 minutes battle. The game went the distance as Verdasco came from two sets to one down after winning the crucial fourth set on a tie break. He went on to win the game 7-6, 4-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2.
It has been a tournament of upset as big names like Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams and Sam Stosur have been dumped out of the tournament.
