Today is seen as the highest number of executions in Saudi Arabia since 1995. The Kingdom executed 47 people on Saturday for terrorism, suspected al-Qaeda members but also a very prominent Shia Muslim cleric, Nimr al-Nimr, was among those executed, the Interior Ministry said in a statement broadcast on state television.
Protest broke out today in Bahrain, following the execution. Iran's foreign ministry said that Saudi Arabia would "pay a high price" for execution of the cleric.
