Judge excuses himself from Nnamdi Kanu case

Justice Ahmed Mohammed has excused himself from hearing the treason charges brought against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, by the government.

Mr. Kanu had said that a trial was "needless" because the government had repeatedly disobeyed previous court rulings.

Mr. Kanu is standing trial after being accused by the government of plotting to split Nigeria, by creating a Biafra Republic with south east, south south states, and parts of Kogi and Benue states, as component units.

The accused, who was arraigned in court on Wednesday, told the court before commencement of the prosecution’s plea that he preferred being held in detention than subjecting himself to a trial, whose outcome will not be respected.

He accused the State Security Service of violating and abusing the outcomes of previous trials.
